Sammanfattning

This article reports on findings from studies of the private health care sector in six low- and middle-income countries. The studies have been carried out within the Karolinska-Harvard Private Sector Programme in Health (PSP), a collaborative research programme involving 10 institutions in 8 countries. Findings show a widespread use of private sector providers by patients. Various problems related to private providers are identified in the studies, but the private sector's potential for reaching the poor through public health programmes is also pointed out. The authors conclude that the private sector needs to be acknowledged and considered in health systems development and planning in low- and middle income countries.
