Sammanfattning
This literature review exposes depression as a risk factor in the development of ischaemic heart disease, as well as the fact that AMI is a contributory factor in the development of depression.
Research shows that AMI patients who simultaneously develop symptoms of depression have a higher mortality rate than those who do not.
It is known that treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) does not expose the patient to risk. On the other hand, it has not yet been proven that the treatment of post AMI depression symptoms reduces their increased mortality rate.
The article asks whether heart patients can be better helped by rehabilitation post-AMI if they are systematically screened for depression.
