Sammanfattning

The prodrome of psychotic disorders may last for several years. Symptoms often develop during the late teens. Results from international research indicate that transition to psychosis can be delayed by means of specific treatment. This article reviews present knowledge about identification and treatment of patients who are presumably in the prodromal phase. The authors also present results from a study performed in Stockholm, Sweden. Extensive efforts were made to inform the psychiatric organization as well as the social services about prodromal symptoms in order to identify young patients and offer them treatment. By use of known criteria, it appeared possible to demarcate a group of people at high risk for transition to psychosis. This group was distinguished by a low degree of functioning and was in great need of psychiatric treatment. 20% of these people developed serious psychoses. The patients could be treated at a very early stage.
