Sammanfattning

Psychiatric emergency referrals should be followed up in order to assess the effectiveness of the mental health service system as a whole. In Örebro County in Sweden, the number of psychiatric emergency visits increased continuously between January 1 2003 and June 15 2006. Most notably, the number of visits by people who had visited the psychiatric emergency department before increased, which suggests that the continuity of care is inadequate. Almost half of the emergency visits were made during office hours. By comparison with first time visitors, repeat visitors were more likely to be: middle-aged, male, living on social security, self-referred and alcohol abusers. They were also more frequently admitted to hospital than first time visitors. The availability of the psychiatric outpatient services and the functioning of the local governments' services for abusers influence the workload faced by the psychiatric emergency department.
