Sammanfattning

Different understandings of whether nursing should be based on the caregiver’s sense of vocation are investigated through a discourse analysis including a full years articles published in papers and journals, all addressing the issue «Nurses and vocation». The discourse analysis shows that the idea of the need for the nurse to have a sense of vocation both can be grounded in a religious understanding of vocation and in what is called common human obligations. These understandings are voiced from different positions in society holding both journalists, academic nurses and members of the church, but are not shared with the nurses working in the clinical area, who want nursing to be a profession and find the demands on the nurse’s motivation for being a nurse a hindrance for this purpose.
