Sammanfattning
n 2004 a nationwide representative survey was conducted in order to describe the level of oral health related quality of life in the adult population in Norway. Four hypotheses were related to age, sex, length of education and dental status. Questionnaires were sent by TNS Gallup to a sample of 3 538 persons. 2 471 persons participated (70 %). Oral health related quality of life was measured by the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP14). The results showed that from 5?-?50 % of the population had had problems related to one or more of the 14 OHIP indicators. When a sumscore of the 14 OHIP indicators was constructed and related to background variables by multiple regression analysis, three background variables, age, gender, and dental status had independent direct effects upon oral health related quality of life: Younger persons, surprisingly, more than older persons, women more than men, and persons with no natural teeth rather than persons with most of their natural teeth had had problems from their teeth or mouth during the last 12 months. Having experienced problems was not systematically related to length of education bivariately. Controlling for the effect of other variables by multiple regression analysis, length of education was significantly related to OHIP sumscore. The results show a need for further interpretation of what lies behind peoples’ perception of oral health related quality of life.
