Sammanfattning
The literature on eosinophilic esophagitis (EE) is reviewed and a typical case presented. A prevalence of about 1% has been reported in a normal Swedish population. Taken together with a considerable delay from onset of symptoms to diagnosis the relatively few cases diagnosed per year reflect a need for an increased awareness of the entity. Special attention should be paid to cases with esophageal bolus obstruction or esophageal dysphagia of unknown cause. There is a need to actively search for the diagnose by including a number of biopsies taken in the work up, either during the acute endoscopy or at a later follow up. However, not only specialists handling these particular cases but also common practitioners and others involved in the healthcare chain should be well aware of the eosinophilic esophagitis entity.
