Sammanfattning

In a representative population of patients hospitalised in the community of Göteborg with a final diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction (mean age 75 years) the long term prognosis was more alarming than previously reported in the literature. Thus, during the first year after onset of symptoms 30 % had died and during the first 3 years 45 % had died. Only 60 % of the patients were treated in coronary care units. High risk groups were those who never reached the coronary care unit and those who did not have initial symptoms of acute myocardial infarction.
