Sammanfattning
Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) belonging to the herpesviridae family, is post primary infection latent and reactivates under favourable conditions. Reactivation of latent HCMV has been linked to inflammation and consequently associated with various inflammatory diseases. Due to the extensive immunomodulatory capacity of HCMV, it could potentially contribute to the inflammatory disease processes. An active HCMV infection has been observed in intestinal tissue from a majority of patients with ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, diverticulitis and appendicitis. If HCMV is a causal pathogen or merely an epiphenomenon remains to be determined. Further research is needed in order to firmly establish the effects of antiviral treatment targeting HCMV in inflammatory bowel diseases, diverticulitis and acute appendicitis.
