Sammanfattning

The use of peripherally inserted central venous catheters (PICC) appears to be increasing, especially in patients undergoing cytostatic therapy. It has been suggested that the technique has several advantages relating to complications, over well established methods such as peripheral and central venous catheters. The support for this claim seems to be rather weak. This paper reviews the scientific literature on the matter. There is a need for large, prospective well-designed studies before the use of PICC becomes implemented on a larger scale.
