Sammanfattning

Communication failures contribute to the majority of adverse events in healthcare. Information loss or distortion happens particularly often in transfer of care. Effective communication should be / needs to be timely, accurate, complete, and unambiguous in order for the members of a health care team to build a shared mental model and situational awareness. This is of utmost importance in critical situations requiring the team members´ immediate attention and action. The communication format SBAR (Situation - Background - Assessment - Recommendation) is used in complex working environments for situational briefing. SBAR provides a common and predictable structure to communication, and is a hybrid of medical and nursing communication styles. A number of organisations promoting patient safety in America actively support the implementation of structured communication and SBAR in healthcare. The two largest non-profit health systems in the USA have already implemented SBAR into the care process. These developments provide an opportunity for authorities, providers and academic organisations in Swedish healthcare to similarly support the implementation of structured communication and SBAR in order to enhance patient safety in Sweden.
