Sammanfattning
Incurable illness and the approach of death involve many difficult situations for the person concerned and their relatives. At different levels of society people work to make the conditions easier for these families. Palliative treatment is influenced by certain ideals and notions, which are often incomprehensible to outsiders. The purpose of this article is to deduce ideals of a "good death" as they are expressed in six Danish health policy reports on the palliative field from 1985 to 2006. The approach is inspired by social constructivism and is a discourse analysis of the reports. The results show that a "good death" is associated with people living and/or dying in their own home. Conditions which must prevail for a death to be "good" are asserted through discourses rooted in medicine, psychology, philosophy/religion and political science. If the health services are to live up to their intentions for shared care, it is vital for us to develop knowledge which in the broad sense includes the everyday lives of people dying from cancer- and non-cancer-related diseases as well as their relatives.
