Sammanfattning

Contagious tuberculosis was diagnosed in 1997 in a 37-year-old woman originally from South East Asia, working in a Swedish day care center. 14 children out of a total of 87 of whom she had taken care had positive tuberculin skin test results as a sign of acquired tuberculosis. A couple of these cases had active disease, one boy with tuberculous pleuritis and a girl with primary tuberculosis. Another three were suspected of having primary tuberculosis. About seven years later a search was made of all those exposed, roughly 110 persons, in the Swedish National tuberculosis register without any further cases reported having been diagnosed with tuberculosis in the meantime. Prolonged and close contact with a person suffering from highly contagious tuberculosis constitutes a 50 % risk of acquiring tuberculosis. Our results confirm this observation with regard to the fact that not all children had such a close contact with the index case. The results also confirm the well-known fact that the great risk of becoming actively sick with tuberculosis is during the first two years after exposure to a tuberculosis case.
