Being diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder can be an overwhelming experience, with both denial and resignation among the observed psychological responses. These reactions are often obstacles to treatment and recovery. This paper describes a project in which patients who have recovered from bipolar disorder coach newly diagnosed patients. The assumption was that recovered patients can bring hope and understanding in a way that is difficult for health care professionals. Three coaches were trained and 24 clients received coaching. Overall, the patients deemed coaching to be a positive experience and reported that it provided something not offered by traditional health care. The coaches encountered some ethical dilemmas and emphasized the importance of adequate training in anticipation of such problems. In conclusion, coaching seems to add value to psychiatric care and is worthy of further methodological refinement and evaluation.
