Sammanfattning
The article concerns young people between the age of 15 and 19 who seek help at a somatic accident and emergency unit having attempted to commit suicide, and who are not under psychiatric treatment or attached to psychiatry in any other way. On the basis of National Board of Health recommendations, three focus areas were selected:
Discussion of attitudes and myths
Preparation of interview guides
Clarification of possible follow-up procedures to which young patients who have attempted suicide can be referred.
We have not examined whether or not our efforts have the effect we believe they do. We have successfully exploded some myths and shifted some attitudes. This was a requisite for being ill to change our practice, which is now more in line with the recommendations of the Board of Health, literature and studies. There has been a change of attitude in the person or group, an interview guide has been prepared, as have reference materials and general material for patients and relatives.
With the focus on the recommendations of the Board of Health, there has been a noticeable improvement in the quality of care and treatment of the patients.
