Sammanfattning
Periodontitis is known as a complex multifactorial disease including etiological factors of the host. The literature shows that the subgingival microbiota is accepted as a major etiological factor of periodontal diseases. Bacterial identification based on the presence of 16S rRNA-genes has revealed a diverse bacterial flora of the oral cavity. A previous focus on a few pathogenic bacteria is now replaced by the attention to complex microbial communities to understand infectious diseases. Metagenomics is a technology established to expand the understanding of how complex microbial communities function and how microbes interact with each other. The ecological plaque hypothesis and new molecular techniques will contribute with new knowledge to complex oral diseases.
