Sammanfattning

The purpose of this longitudinal research was to compare perceptions of fatigue among Icelandic women (n=48; 30-74 years old) diagnosed with breast cancer, at different treatment points, with women without the disease, working at a nursing home (n=44; 19-66 years old). The assessment of fatigue was performed at two points, i.e. at the starting point (Time-one: T1) and four to five weeks later (Time-two: T2). The comparison was done using the Piper Fatigue Scale (PFS) and a demographic questionnaire. Fatigue was common among the study participants. There was a significant difference in the mean level of fatigue experienced by women with breast cancer compared to the non-affected cohort at T2 but not at T1. The fatigue level was not significantly higher in women with low haemoglobin levels compared to women with high haemoglobin levels. Women with breast cancer had experienced fatigue significantly longer than the control group. No significant difference in fatigue levels was observed among women with breast cancer that received different types of cancer treatment. Our results show that fatigue among women with breast cancer is common but varies, and underlines the importance of assessing fatigue among women with breast cancer during treatment.
