Sammanfattning
Background. Modern ultrasound screening diagnostic provides pregnant women a visual display of their child a long time before giving birth.
Most of the women are not prepared when abnormalities is indicated.
Methods. The project is based upon 22 qualitative research interviews with recently pregnant women. All interviewees were women with different
experiences on being informed of abnormalities in their screening around the 18th week.
Merleau-Ponnty states that the body is a subject linked to meaning and experiences. This article analyses women’s narratives of their experiences
related to this theory.
Findings. Many informants signalled a dualism of their own body. The change occurred when the diagnosis was established. They also experienced
being reduced to a container for the fetus. All women describe a distance to their own body and that they experienced their body as alien.
Conclusions. The informants experienced in different ways how they wanted to, but were unable to, escape their body’s physical presence, and
the significance of their own body. Their main strategy was to distance themselves from these processes, but the pathway to coping may be
through an explicit dialogue with the women’s experiences. In this dialogue the women themselves may find meaning in this life experience.
