Sammanfattning

A care centre resident consumes alcohol in such a way as to disturb the staff, other residents and relatives. The nurse contacts an alcohol consultant who meets the affected staff on three occasions for two hours each time over a period of five months. The objective is the most people to feel that the atmosphere at the centre has improved The method involves a combination of instruction and professional guidance with motivation interviews as a reference framework. At the final meeting, the staff is able to describe se-veral experiences of success: They are now more professional and alcohol is involved. They have changed their attitudes and thus their behaviour. Alcohol consumption habits at residential institutions for physically or mentally handicapped people involve a variety of dilemmas, and in this regard, both nursing guidelines, the local alcohol policy and a municipal alcohol consultant, if available, can be a great help.
