Sammanfattning

Since 1992 admission to medical studies at Karolinska Institutet has been based on tests and interviews (PIL and LÄFO) as an alternative to upper secondary school grade point average (GPA) or Scholastic Aptitude test results (SAT). The present investigation is the first long-term follow-up study assessing different modes of admission to medical studies at Karolinska Institutet in terms of results of examinations and performance during and following internship. No significant differences were found in the average results neither in the written part of the final examination (including medicine, surgery, psychiatry and family medicine) following internship nor at the oral examination in psychiatry between students admitted via PIL, LÄFO or on the basis of their GPA or SAT. However, students admitted by tests and interviews were younger at the time of the final examination following internship than the rest of the students.
