Sammanfattning
The SPARCL study demonstrated that high dose atorvastatin diminshes risk of recurrent fatal and non-fatal cerebrovascular disease in patients with previous transitory ischaemic cerebrovascular attack or ischaemic stroke. The positive effect was due to a diminished rate of ischaemic stroke, which comprised 85 percent of all strokes. In the remaining 15 percent of haemorrhagic strokes the risk for a recurrent event was significantly increased by atorvastatin. The risk of haemorrhagic stroke was unrelated to low levels of LDL cholesterol. Atorvastatin treatment decreased all cardiovascular events and revascularizations. High dose atorvastatin was well tolerated in this patient category.
