Sammanfattning
Genital warts (condyloma acuminata, GW) represent an early clinical manifestation of sexually transmitted infection with Human Papillomavirus. It has previously been reported that ~90% of GW are caused by HPV 6 or 11. Vaccines against HPV 6, 11, 16 and 18 are currently available and GW can therefore be viewed as a preventable disease. In order to evaluate vaccine efficacy in preventing GW, systems for surveillance of the clinical burden of GW as well as for monitoring the HPV-types present in GW, are needed. A pilot project regarding monitoring and HPV-typing of GW has been performed. HPV-types 6 or 11 were detected in only 60% of GW. One of the four HPV-types covered by the quadrivalent vaccine was present in 72% of GW. Oncogenic HPV-types were considerably more common in GW in women than in men.The project demonstrated the feasibility of reporting and HPV-typing GW and gives an approximate baseline of HPV-types present in GW prior to extensive HPV-vaccination.
