Sammanfattning
The article presents a survey of how many and which patients with deep venous thrombosis (DVT) were able to inject themselves with low molecular heparin, and what characterised the group of patients not able to do so.
The study, which was retrospective, included 58 patients with DVT treated by specialist nurses at the thrombosis clinic of Århus Hospital.
The result was that 72 per cent were able to inject themselves and the study suggests the potential for patients to master self-injection of low molecular heparin can be improved when nurses have the required competencies and information material is prepared for the patients.
Those patients who were unable to inject themselves suffer from other complaints which may constitute the reason for their choosing district nursing.
The knowledge that the majority of patients can learn to inject themselves may in future reduce the number of tasks to be carried out by district nurses and is also likely to lead to a reduction in the number of days spent in hospital.
