Sammanfattning
The Swedish Association for Old Age Psychiatry conducted an inventory of all Swedish counties in order to survey the organisation and resources in the Swedish medical services for elderly with psychiatric diseases. Further impairments had taken place compared with a previous study conducted in 1999-2000. In a majority of counties, medical activities specially aimed for elderly people with common psychiatric diseases such as depression, anxiety disorders and psychosis were lacking. The total number of beds had decreased by nearly 50 %. Investigation and treatment according to treatment programmes occur only as an exception for other patient groups than those with dementia. The share of services for doctors working with elderly with psychiatric diseases had decreased in relation to the total number of psychiatrists and geriatricians. The number of neuropsychologists had also decreased. Specific and qualified psychotherapeutic resources for elderly were lacking in a large majority of counties. Swedish old age psychiatry is in strong need of a well thought out strategy for development. The education in old age psychiatry must be intensified. One specialized old age psychiatry unit in every county constitutes a minimal requirement.
