Sammanfattning

Oxidative stress is hypothesized to be one of the major fundamental phenomenon behind many acute and chronic diseases, and normal aging process. However, the assessment of free radicals or their end products have shown to be intricated. Isoprostanes are prostaglandin-like bioactive compounds that are biosynthesized in vivo, principally through free radical catalysation of arachidonic acid. Isoprostanes have now been considered as consistent biomarkers of oxidative stress as evidenced by an independent comparative study of different biomarkers of oxidative stress organized by the National Institute of Health, USA. A number of these compounds have potent biological activities such as vasoconstrictive and certain inflammatory properties. Isoprostanes are involved in many human disorders. In addition, increased levels of F2-isoprostanes have also been observed in normal human pregnancy and following intake of some fatty acids. Currently, measurement of F2-isoprostanes in body fluids provides a most reliable non-invasive analytical tool to study oxidative stress-related diseases and experimental inflammatory conditions, evaluation of various antioxidants, fatty acids, drugs, and also the role of free radicals in physiology.
