Sammanfattning
A study has elucidated connections between the Danes' sense of security and their social capital, i.e. social networks and the reliability of same. International studies frequently nominate the Danes as one of the world's happiest peoples. The question is whether this can be accredited to the welfare state.
The study suggests that the Danes' individual social capital is also in good shape, in that more than half the population has efficient networks (fami-ly, friends, etc.) And one quarter have one strong network. Above a certain minimum, there is no correlation between social and financial capital, and social capital is more important as far as well-being is concerned.
Sickness, social events and ageing/decline can reduce social capital. Old people's lack of ability to use modern communications technology augments this.
There is therefore good reason to attach considerable importance on the existence and quality of a patient's network when planning their nursing care. Compensatory measures, which in practice may be sheltered housing and ultimately room at an old people's home, thus seem to be crucial for people without substantial social capital.
