Sammanfattning

The brachial plexus may be severely injured after high energy trauma such as in motorcycle accidents. Associated injuries may also be located in the skull, chest, and abdomen, involving major blood vessels and fractures at different locations. These injuries have to be medically prioritized adequately. A thorough and meticulous clinical neurological examination, often repeated, is important, with possible complementary MRI examination, CT-myelography and/or neurophysiological examination. Surgical repair and reconstruction is determined by the extent and nature of plexus lesion. Neurobiological and clinical research supports the early reconstruction of brachial plexus lesions in adults to achieve improved functional recovery. Rehabilitation of brachial plexus lesions is crucial, although it can be long, and it also needs to include adequate pain treatment.
