Sammanfattning

For many years, mast cells have mostly been recognized for their harmful effects during allergic reactions. In addition, recent research has enhanced our negative view of the mast cell, showing that they cause damage in a number of other diseases, including arthritis, inflammatory skin disease, atherosclerosis and cancer. However, it has now been established that mast cells also can exert activities that are beneficial to their host, for example by providing protection against pathogens and by preventing excessive inflammatory reactions. Together, this new knowledge has led to the notion that mast cells and their products may constitute targets for therapeutic intervention in a number of different diseases. However, when targeting mast cells one should show caution in order not to interfere with their beneficial effects.
