Sammanfattning

The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) has become an important tool in modern rehabilitation. ICF accommodates substantial changes in the concepts of disabilities, both in the loci of the problem and in the foci of interventions. In this review, some of the challenges related to the concept 'participation', its definition, assessment and use, are addressed. The identification and importance of 'environmental factors' that can affect participation are also discussed. Recent research indicates that following rehabilitation people with life-long disabilities can perceive their participation as sufficient. In addition, perceived participation and problems in participation are determinants of life satisfaction, and the perception of few encountered environmental barriers is related to good participation. Further research is needed to fully understand the significance of participation and environmental barriers for people with disabilities. This will continue to enhance health care professionals' possibilities to identify important aspects in a person's life and to design interventions that are related to a person's social context.
