Sammanfattning
This article gives an overview of the Swedish use of helicopters in health care related areas. There are seven ambulance helicopter services used for medical emergencies in the northern and middle parts of the country. However, there is no helicopter service in the southern part of Sweden. Since the time factor is of crucial importance for the survival of severely injured patients, there should be a national consensus allowing approximately 90 percent of the country to be reached within 30 minutes. There is also much debate as to whether a physician needs to supplement the crew onboard. At the moment, different helicopter systems in Sweden have different crew compositions. If a national, routine physician staffed helicopter system were to be introduced, it should be organised by the government. This would enable a centrally organised level of education, certification and control.
