The article describes a connection between the professional challenges nurses face, the working environment, and the quality of nursing care provided. By virtue of a case study, and findings from available literature, the study presents the challenges nurses face in clinical practice when providing nursing care to cancer patients with complex health issues. The nursing challenges involved in providing nursing care for such patients are externalised using a nursing-supervision model. The article illustrates the effects of nursing supervision on clinical nursing by using concrete examples. The article concludes that the challenges nur-ses face have a significant effect on the working environment and the quality of nursing care they provide. Nursing supervision is suggested as a possible focus area in order to bring about positive change in this area. The article's message is significant to clinical nursing practice, since the aim of the intervention is to increase the quality of nursing care.
