Sammanfattning

The outcome of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) for 52 patients in Sweden during the period 1991 through 2003 was followed-up through May 2007. Sixty-five percent were alive in May 2007, 19 % had died, and the state of health was unknown for 15 %. Within 24 months from diagnosis 21% relapsed and case-fatality was 12%. MDR-TB was mainly imported, but transmission in Sweden was confirmed by molecular typing in at least 1 case. Despite the serious prognosis a majority of the patients survived with intensive medical treatment. The number of new MDR-TB cases increased sharply during 2008 and 2009 compared to previous years.
