Sammanfattning

Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) are syndromes that are brought together to one disorder with diagnose number G93.3. ME/CFS comprises a range of symptoms of which chronic disabling fatigue is dominant. There may be a number of triggering factors present such as an acute infection and or significant life events. A variation of the severity of symptoms is to be expected as a part of ME/CFS. Setbacks may be triggered by unplanned activities, poor sleep, infection or stress. The patients exhibit post-exertional malaise in response to minimal efforts. The etiology is unknown and there is no known pharmacological treatment or cure for ME/CFS. Symptoms should be managed as in usual clinical practice. The disorder can cause profound, prolonged illness and disability. Co-existing conditions are fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome and depression.
