Sammanfattning
The Italian humanitarian organisation Emergency has established a cardiac surgical centre in Khartoum, Sudan, the Salam Centre for Cardiac Surgery. The hospital has three operating theatres, 15 ICU beds and a large ward with a sub-ICU. The technical equipment is good and up to date. The first open heart procedure was done in April 2007 and since then more than 1100 heart operations have been performed. All investigations and operations are performed completely free of charge. Most patients are young adults and teenagers with severe rheumatic heart disease, but a large number of congenital heart malformations in young children have also been corrected. The results have been good, also after international standards with a 30-day mortality of 3.3 % and no cases of severe wound infections or mediastinitis.
