Sammanfattning

Congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN) are pigmented hamartomas, which are present in 0.2-2.1% of the newborn. CMN are classified according to their expected size in adulthood. Any CMN can cause malignant melanoma, but the risk is higher with larger size. A systematic review of 6571 patient with CMN who were followed for a mean of 3.4-23.7 years showed that 0.7% developed melanoma. The malignant melanoma lifetime risk is still unknown. It is by far highest in children with “garment nevi”. “Garment nevi” and CMN with many satellite nevi may in rare cases be associated with leptomeningeal melanocytosis, which if symptomatic, has a poor prognosis. This paper reviews CMN and presents management guidelines.
