Sammanfattning

We have collected body mass index (BMI) data on four-year old-children from child health care centres in different areas of Sweden. Data from cohorts born after 2000 did not indicate any further increase in overweight (ISO-BMI =25) and obesity (ISO-BMI =30) but there were regional differences in the prevalence of overweight and obesity. The regional differences were stable during the study period. The county council of Stockholm had a low prevalence of overweight and obesity in comparison with many other Swedish regions. However, there were large differences within Stockholm with the highest rates of overweight and obesity in socioeconomic disadvantaged areas. Health and life styles are influenced by the physical and social contexts where the individuals enact. Preventive measures an individual level have only limited success if local attitudes promoting overweight and obesity in young children and their families are not influenced.
