Sammanfattning

The new medical education programme at Karolinska Institutet is now almost fully operational and has met with great enthusiasm but also with criticism. Ten sweeping changes have been introduced in parallel, which has been complicated but has also created a climate of reorientation. A national comparison reveals useful differences between the medical schools in Sweden. The results are due to systematic implementation of quality assurance and development strategies. The curriculum development process has been driven by broad-based student participation and with strong support of teachers and management staff. The success is based on the knowledge that in the long run, medical research at the highest level requires top level medical education – a goal Karolinska Institutet intends to achieve.
