Sammanfattning
This study in the area of incontinence care shows that nursing home residents experience increased well-being, at the same time as there were savings in cost and time-spent washing clothing and bedding, intimate hygiene and skin care, when staff professional competence was increased.
In four care centres over a six month period an intervention study was conducted introducing new pads and training of staff, use of products and optimisation of work routines and structures. Time measurements were performed and journals kept, together with interviews pre- and post-introduction of the holistic solution.
A total of 32 residents on four units, care staff and unit managers, took part in the study. For 22 residents included in the time measurements, journals were kept and the time for each change of adult continence pad noted over a 24-hour period for 7 days, prior to and following introduction of the holistic solution.
A holistic solution, where products are supplemented with service provision, increases the residents well-being and entirely cost- saving. The future aim must be to increase professional focus on incontinence care, an area in which significant operational resources can be freed up, without compromising the quality of care.
