Sammanfattning

During 2007, 308 mothers of new cases at an outpatient child psychiatric clinic were routinely asked if they had been subject to intimate partner violence (IPV). Affirmative responses were given by 21 % of the mothers. Their children were significantly more often subject to abuse by the mother's partner than children in the comparison group. Despite the new routine, questions about IPV were not asked in 30 % of the new cases (n=130). Asking was much more common among staff members who had professional experience of working with victims of IPV. Asking questions about domestic violence was also more common if; the child was younger, the mother had initiated the contact herself or the social services had initiated the referral compared to other referrals (e.g. schools). Discussion includes; validity of reports, prevalence of domestic violence, the importance of routinely asking about domestic violence within child psychiatry, and implications for treatment.
