Sammanfattning
The article presents findings from a study examining how elements of family-centred nursing are incorporated into paediatric nursing prac--tice. The definition of family-centred nursing used is one developed by a group of English parents and researchers in the 1950s.
The method consists of an observational study of five nurses on a paediatric unit in Denmark over five day shifts. A time study was also performed to examine the working duties of five nurses over five 8.5 hour day shifts.
The observational study shows that nurses involve mothers in care and treatment of the child to a far greater degree than they do fathers, and that siblings are often neglected in family-centred nursing. The time study shows that the nurses spend an average of one hour a day with the families.
Nursing consequences: Caring for the parents and siblings of a sick child in a hospital setting appears to be a complex task. The nurses also have numerous other roles including administrative and service-oriented tasks, which reduce the amount of time spent in direct family care and make it difficult to live up to the ideals of family-centre nursing. An evidence-based method of implementing family-centred nursing and a prioritising of the working duties of nurses would be beneficial.
