Sammanfattning
Health care-associated infections and antibiotic-resistant bacteria constitute growing problems. Hence, proper hand hygiene is of great importance. Alcohol-based disinfectants with humectants are preferable to water and detergents, not only for reduction of micro-organisms, but also in view of the potential for causing skin irritation. For people working in health care, adherence to the required hand hygiene procedures entails an increased risk of irritant contact dermatitis. In case if dermatitis, workers may have difficulty washing their hands or using alcohol-based disinfectants in a correct manner. The stinging sensation caused by the alcohol-based hand rubs can be misinterpreted as harmful, and the health care worker is inclined to use them more sparingly or not at all. Few studies have examined the effects of alcohol-based hand rubs on already irritated skin or skin with a manifest dermatitis. However, most data indicate that alcohol-based hand disinfectants are preferable even in these cases.
