Sammanfattning
Cardiac papillary fibroelastoma (CPF) is a rare primary tumor of the heart, most commonly found on the cardiac valves. Although benign and often small in size, a CPF can cause serious thromboembolic complications or valvular obstruction. The increased use of echocardiography has improved characterization and directed treatment of possible sources of cardiogenic embolism. The recommended therapy for CPF is prompt surgical removal which can normally be performed by simple excision without the need for valvular reconstruction. The article describes a patient suffering from stroke caused by a 17 mm mobile CPF on the aortic valve, who was subsequently treated successfully by surgical excision. A review of the literature is included.
