Sammanfattning
Background: Close to 40 pct. of the Danish population has used CAM and several studies also document a high use of CAM among cancer patients as a supplement to the conventional treatment. As a consequence there is a need for reviews on the effects of CAM for cancer. This article is concerned with manipulative and body-based CAM.
Methods: Pubmed, the Cochrane library, CHINAL, AMED and Science citation index were systematically searched for reviews on effects of CAM for cancer or cancer related symptoms published 2000-2008. All studies were quality assessed and ranked according to the SIGN hierarchy of evidence.
Results: Ten reviews were identified and five were rated as of high quality. This provides a total of 3473 patients from 41 single studies including both clinical trials and observational studies. The most consistent result is that massage can reduce anxiety in cancer patients. Tentative conclusions on antidepressant, pain and nausea reductive effects are offered. No review concludes that massage is harmful, and the former myth that massage could support spread of cancer is denounced. Conclusion: Massage can safely be combined with conventional cancer treatment and used as evidence based nursing to reduce anxiety in cancer patients. There is further need of reviews and studies on other forms of manipulative and body-based therapies including reflexology. We also need more knowledge about how different forms of massage may differ in regard to their effect, how different cancer diagnosis or disease stages benefits from massage, and on cost-benefit of massage therapy for cancer patients.
