Sammanfattning

Background: In recent years a new class of transcriptional regulators has been characterized, microRNA (miRNA). Intensive research is trying to clarify the role of miRNAs in normal and pathological conditions. Materials and methods: This paper is based upon a non-systematic PubMed search. Relevant publications were selected on the basis of title and abstract, as well as authors/scientific milieu and the scientific level of the publication in which the paper was published. Results and conclusion: miRNA constitutes a comprehensive class of small non-coding RNAs with sequence-specific regulation of transcription. miRNA regulates a diversity of biological processes such as differentiation, apoptosis and proliferation. Recent research points to miRNA and miRNA mutations as crucial in cancer development, i.e. miRNAs acting as tumor suppressors (inhibit proliferation) or oncogenes (promote proliferation). Synthetic miRNAs are tools utilized in molecular biological research in order to illuminate the function of new and unknown genes.
