Sammanfattning
Since 1969, when 46 percent of Swedish doctors smoked, surveys of doctors' tobacco habits have been performed approximately every fifth year. In 2006 only 3 percent of the doctors were daily smokers consuming an average of 5 cigarettes per day, a significant and considerable decrease since 1969. Taking into account that daily use, mixed (cigarettes and/or smokeless tobacco), and occasional use occurred in 26 percent of the male doctors and in 13 percent of the female doctors the total reduction of tobacco use is less impressive. General practitioners and internists were significantly more active, compared to surgeons and psychiatrists, in giving smoking cessation support. Female doctors gave more assistance for smoking cessation than male doctors. Nicotine replacement therapy was recommended for cessation, rarely smokeless tobacco. The majority supported price increases, a sales ban of tobacco in hospitals, a tobacco tax earmarked for research and prevention.
