Sammanfattning

In Sweden faecal occult blood tests (FOBT) are commonly used as diagnostic aids in primary care. This retrospective study concerned results of an immunochemical FOBT (iFOBT) in a general practice 2005 - 2007. Over 1000 tests on 303 patients led to diagnosis of one of totally seven colorectal cancers. In half of the 58 patients with positive iFOBT, no colorectal source of bleeding was found. At least one-fourth of the patients with positive iFOBT did not undergo full investigation of the colon and rectum. Two-thirds of those who reported rectal bleeding showed negative iFOBT. In cases with positive iFOBT the strongest indication for further investigation was presence of iron deficiency anaemia. Further studies concerning indications, optimal number of tests, and haemoglobin threshold values are needed to clarify the role of iFOBT in clinical practice.
