Sammanfattning
PBC is a slowly progressive, cholestatic autoimmune liver disease that primarily affects middle-aged women. Approximately 200 new cases are diagnosed yearly in Sweden. The prognosis is good in asymptomatic patients, while established cirrhosis is associated with increased risk for liver related death and HCC. Treatment with UDCA slows progression of liver damage and should be instituted early. In addition, prophylactic treatment directed at osteoporosis and malnutrition should be considered.
