Sammanfattning

This paper summarizes and discusses the current knowledge regarding alcohol consumption and alcoholic liver disease in Sweden. According to statistics from the Centre for Social Research on Alcohol and Drugs (SoRAD) alcohol consumption increased by 20% in Sweden between 1997 and 2007. The consumption of spirits did not increase (-8%), but there has been a marked increase in strong beer and wine consumption (46 and 60% respectively). During the same period, mortality from liver diseases and especially from alcoholic liver disease increased. The number of women who died of alcoholic liver disease increased by 83 % between 1997 and 2007 which was somewhat more than the mortality increase for men (65%). Also the number of men and women who were hospitalized with alcoholic liver disease has increased in the 10-year period, by 10 per cent for men and by 20 per cent for women. We conclude that the increase in alcohol consumption in Sweden has been a key factor in explaining the increased mortality and morbidity in alcoholic liver disease. Measures aiming at reducing overall drinking are important to change this development.
