The Verbal Autopsy (VA) method is an epidemiological instrument used to obtain cause specific mortality data in low- and middle-income countries where vital registrations systems are absent or insufficient. Description of the method, its uses, limitations, validation procedures and methodological advances are included in the article. The VA-method is, and will continue to be, an important tool to derive cause-specific mortality data in areas where there vital registration is insufficient and it is essential to validate and standardise the method.
