Sammanfattning
Introduction: The radiographer`s communication with the patient is crucial for the practice of diagnostic imaging.
Purpose of the study: To explore the radiographers` communication with patients undergoing computer-tomography (CT-exam).
Material and methodology: The empirical material is collected from observations of six
radiographers` performance of CT-exams in 30 patients. In addition four out of the six radiographers had an in depth interview with the researcher (observer) subsequent to the CT-exams.
The study was performed at a public health hospital.
Findings: Some radiographers communicate detailed information and use this to get in contact with the patient. Other radiographers provide information with different level of details,
sometimes as part of the procedure, without establishing contact with personal involvement.
A third group of radiographers want to do the examination as quickly as possible. They communicate with the patients only if necessary for carrying out the examination.
Conclusion: Radiographers provide information to patients dependent on what they consider
to be the purpose of the information. Some radiographers use information to establish a
relationship in which the patients will trust the radiographer, while other only communicate
the information needed to carry out the examination. The study identifies a substantial
need for consciousness about the radiographers` role and responsibility in their professional
performance.
